Academic advisors are here to help you complete your degree and plan for the future. All students have an assigned advisor based on their major. Your advisor is able to assist you with course planning, transfer planning, finding resources and answering any questions you may have. The earlier you meet with us, the better we can assist you with planning for the future.

What Can Advisors Do?
Here is a list of just some of the things advisors can help you with:
- Course planning for one or more semesters
- Helping you make a plan for transferring to the college/university of your choice after NHCC
- Creating a plan of all the courses you need to graduate and when you should take them
- Completing appeals and answering questions about different holds on your account
- Answering questions about classes and finding on campus resources
- Have a question but not sure who to ask? An advisor can help you with these too!
Who is my Advisor?
All students admitted to North Hennepin are assigned to an academic advisor based on the major in our records. Find your advisor by looking up the advisor assigned to your major in Navigate or on the Meet the Advising Team page.
How to Connect With an Advisor
Appointments vs. Drop-Ins
Appointments
Appointments are the best way to meet with your assigned advisor and are scheduled for 30 minutes at a day and time that works best for you. They are available in person and also by phone or Zoom. Appointments are required for the following topics:
- Appeal Tuition/Late Withdraw
- Approved suspension appeals
- Transfer planning and creating long term educational plans (more than one semester of course planning)
- Degree Appeal
- Mid-Term Self Evaluation
- Returning to NHCC after an extended time away (two years or more)
- Graduation Checks

Drop-Ins
Drop-ins are typically 10-15 minutes long and are designed for simple questions. A drop-in is a same day, first come/first served meeting with an advisor and can be done in person or by phone. You may not be able to meet with your assigned advisor, but we will do our best to have you meet with an advisor who works with your program of study. Because drop-ins are short meetings, we limit the types of topics that can be discussed. Here is the list of things that can be done during a drop-in:
- One semester course planning
- Consortium Agreements
- Course Exchange/Late Entry Form
- Degree Requirement or Transfer Appeal
- General Questions
- Maximum Time Frame Questions
- Pre-Requisite Appeal
- Waiver to Exceed Maximum Credits
- Withdrawing/dropping a class
- If your question will take longer than 15 minutes to answer, we will ask you to schedule an appointment
Wait times can vary and are typically longer during over the lunch hour and during peak enrollment periods (1-2 weeks before the semester starts and the first week of the semester).
